What is Data Storytelling?
Data without a narrative or context is just data. Consider the BBC television programme Dragon’s Den - the programme where entrepreneurs look for significant investment from risk-averse venture capitalists in return for equity in their business. The participants are ushered into an imposing room with the Dragons arrayed in front of them. Beside each, is a table with piles of £50 notes. But it’s not the money the entrepreneurs want - it’s the Story that the money will enable. Money is just data. Without context, it’s worthless - it won’t even burn these days! But having the money enable a “This means that …” narrative. Data without a Story is information. Data with a story is compelling, incisive and relevant.

My skills I am a highly motivated Business Analyst, Knowledge and Business Discovery specialist and professional Excel Developer. My background I’ve recently retired from the IT industry after carving out a senior and very successful career in large multi-national IT Services outsourcing companies. Between 2000 and 2017, while working in complex multi-million $ deal procurements, I excelled in the design, development, deployment, maintenance, and training of Excel applications, utilities and workbooks. Much of this work was alongside Tier 1 business consultants doing UK Gov contracts and large commercial pursuits. In 2017, my focus moved from local Excel workbooks to the wider world of Data Analytics, Data Sciences and visualisations. My introduction to Business Discovery and telling the Business Story of the Data. The industry was moving from the “what this is” of data to the “what this means” and I was perfectly poised to embrace this new ethos. My ethos When faced with constrained timelines, mission critical challenges, inflexible requirements, and daunting objectives; when no one would (or could) stand up, I did. I seldom knew how to achieve what was needed. That never stopped me. Still doesn’t. I’m known as “the guy that gets it done”. I’ve repeatedly staked my reputation by undertaking and committing to the creation of the seemingly impossible. Not once in 25 years have I failed to deliver game changing solutions. With curiosity, resourcefulness, determination, lateral thinking, creativity, and a commitment to excellence I make the impossible possible. I translate business requirements into technology which in turn delivers measurable, qualitative and quantifiable business outcomes.
